Beautiful Winter Lawns Bermuda lawns go dormant and become brown with the first winter frost. To have a green lawn all winter, your summer lawn needs to be overseeded with perennial rye grass seed. Overseeding can be done any time after the end of September in low desert areas. Warm nighttime temperatures encourage faster germination, however, high daytime temperatures can dry out the turf area. It is best to plant when nighttime temperatures are below 60 degrees and daytime temperatures are below 90 to 95 degrees. Prior to seeding, the lawn should be scalped or de-thatched so seed is right on the ground. Remove all debris after de-thatching. This will speed germination and improve the general vigor of the lawn. Sow seed in two directions to ensure even distribution. Spread one half in one direction and the other half in a direction perpendicular to the first. We recommend applying seed with a broadcast spreader on a calm day. Seeding rates are 6 lb. to 8 lb. for Village Green or Short Cut blends, and 6 lb. to 10 lb. for Team fescue blend per thousand square feet of area. After sowing, pre-emergent herbicide may be applied to areas like flowerbeds where you do not wish seed to germinate. Amaze or Weedstopper, products both containing Surflan, or Barricade pre-emergent herbicides will keep beds clean for months. We recommend using a starter fertilizer to give your new winter lawn a healthy start. Starter Fertilizer with IBDU slow release Nitrogen, 10-18-22, or 6-20-20 fertilizer are great choices. These will not burn when applied as per instructions, and will last four weeks. To apply, spread 5 lb. fertilizer over 1000 square feet. If you have water penetration problems, apply First Step Soil Acidifier at a rate of 3 lb. per 1000 square feet. Applying First Step at the time you overseed will also deter birds that might otherwise feed on your seed. A follow-up fertilization should take place in four weeks, using a Par-Ex 32-3-8 slow release fertilizer with IBDU. To save water and seed, cover the seed with Greenworld Top Dressing mulch at a rate of one cubic yard per 1500 square feet. For smaller areas, use at a rate of fourteen 1.5 cubic foot bags per 1000 square feet, or 1.4 bags per each 10’x10’ area. Top dressing protects the seed from drying out and greatly aids germination. We do not recommend manure because of weed seeds, odor, and high soluble salts content. Water 3 to 5 times per day, about 1/8 inch each time starting about 7 A.M. with the last watering about 6 P.M. Keep the lawn moist until germination is complete. After germination, the intervals between watering should be decreased until the lawn is being thoroughly watered once or twice per week.
